What is a communication system?

There are many types of alternative communication systems.  Most people are familiar with the most common system, sign language.  Another method has been developed using line drawings symbolizing words.  Symbols are drawn on individual cards which are handed to the "listener," or placed on a stable communication board, and desired words indicated by pointing to a given symbol.  The purpose of an alternative communication system is to empower a non-verbal individual to make requests and communicate their thoughts and feelings, thereby becoming more independent and self-sufficient.

A major benefit of these visual systems is their ease of use. A non-verbal individual can quickly learn to use this method, and the symbols are readily understood by the person with whom they are trying to communicate. These symbols can be hand drawn, or constructed using a computer program such as Boardmaker by Mayer-Johnson.

Each system is designed to address the unique needs of the individual, and to meet the specific demands of the environment in which he or she lives.  The level of complexity of the system can be increased as the person becomes more efficient in using it, eventually enabling the him or her to construct complete thoughts and sentences using symbols.  Often, because each line drawing is paired with the written word, the person will begin reading, even though they cannot speak.
